Choosing the Right Size Dog House

The size of a dog house should fit your dog so that it can stand, sit, and turn around comfortably, but not be so large that it cannot retain its body heat. To determine the right size, measure your dog’s length, height at the shoulders, and chest width.

Measuring Your Dog.

  1. Length: Have your dog stand normally and measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (or to the sitting bones).

  2. Height: Measure from the ground to the top of the shoulders.

  3. Chest width: Measure the width across the chest at its widest point.

Adjusting the Dog House Size

  • Length: The dog house should be slightly longer than your dog—about 1.1 times the dog’s body length—so your dog can turn around easily.

  • Width: Aim for about 1.1 times the dog’s height at the shoulders, multiplied by 1.2 for turning space. Alternatively, you can use 2.5 times the dog’s chest width.

  • Height: The interior height should be about 1.2 times the dog’s shoulder height to allow the dog to hold its head up comfortably. The door should be at least as tall as the dog’s shoulder height.

Consider Your Dog’s PreferencesSome dogs prefer cozier, smaller spaces where they feel safe, while others need more room to stretch out. Adjust the dog house size based on your dog’s personality and comfort.
